Lila McNee was a tough nut to crack.

Hannah left three voicemail messages for her, each increasingly whiny, until she finally got Lila to call her back the following week.

“I don’t mean to be rude, but I really don’t want to talk,” Lila said.

“I can’t blame you. But humor me, help me out. At least I’ll be able to tell Bo that I talked to you. It’ll get him off my back.”

“I know how that feels.”

“How long now has he been pestering you to sell?” Hannah asked, knowing that Bo had worried the snot out of Lila for far too long.

“Ever since I came back to Bourbon Springs. Around fifteen months, at least. Could be longer than that. I’ve lost track of time.”

“He’s been after you that long? No wonder you’re not talking to him anymore.”

“Is that what he told you?” Lila asked, amusement in her voice.

“That was his story.”

“What I told him was that I don’t want to talk about selling the land or doing a deal,” Lila clarified. “It’s not like we’re not on speaking terms.”

“Well, not talking about the land is tantamount in his mind to not talking.”

Hannah heard Lila exhale a very long sigh.

“I know he’s your brother, and I’m sorry, but that man is a piece of work.”

“Don’t I know it? And that’s why I’m calling you. Can I come talk to you? Please?”

“About a sale?” Lila said warily.

“That, and other stuff.”

“He’s put you up to this.”

“Of course he has, Lila,” Hannah admitted, laughing. “But think about it: knowing that I got you to talk would bother him to no end.”

“So you want me to join your little conspiracy to annoy your brother?”

“Pretty much.”

“I’m in.”

Lila invited Hannah to lunch at her house the next day; school was out and Lila was on summer break. Although Hannah knew where Lila lived since she was technically right next door to the distillery, Hannah had never been to the McNee house, and she didn’t have a good idea of what the house looked like since it sat so far back from the road. One could see the structure at a distance if one stood at a very precise point on the distillery grounds, but the view was poor.

Hannah knew Lila had inherited the farm a few years earlier after her parents had died in a car accident. The tragedy was well-known in Craig County, as the McNees had been well liked in the community. At the time, Lila had been working as a teacher in Lexington, and her husband worked there as an architect. But then the same tragedy struck—her husband, Colin, was killed in a wreck. According to Kyle, who was Lila’s only cousin and closest relative, her husband had gone out to pick up their anniversary gift and was killed when a truck ran a red light and crashed into his car. After Lila returned to Bourbon Springs, she had looked for another teaching job in vain for a number of months. Then last summer, at Rachel’s request, Hannah had mentioned to Josh that Lila had applied for a teaching position in Craig County.
